One way to use water more responsibly is to bury an olla (pronounced oye-uh) in your garden. This is a Latin word that refers to an often-unglazed ceramic jar that typically has a short neck and wide belly.
Once situated among your plants, the unglazed finish of the olla allows water to slowly seep out into the surrounding soil, providing a steady water supply for thirsty plants. This method of watering is very efficient because the soil is able to slowly absorb the low water level with no run-off.
The olla brands that we sell at the Rainbow Annex are GrowOya and Dropping Springs OLLAS. These are in such high demand, so ask one of our salespeople if you don’t see them in stock. Remember, they come in a variety of sizes.
